How do I use a sword and magic at the same time?

You would equip the sword in one hand and a spell in the other.

So, you can specify which hand does what when equipping things. I think on PC it's right and left mouse button, but it's been a significant minute since I've played on PC. I know that on PlayStation it's right and left bumper (or trigger ... either way), and similar on Xbox. So, you can hit the right bumper to equip a sword in your right (main) hand, and the left bumper to equip a spell in your left (off) hand.

The ONLY reason a sword in your main hand matters is the swing and draw speed. The main hand is faster than the off hand, and spells have a set cast time that isn't affected by the hand it's cast from.

I finally figured it out. I must say it's not the most intuitive system - maybe they could have somehow included this into the tutorial at the start of the game especially considering you do start off with a few spells and if you're like me wanting to play a battlemage type character it would have been really useful to know that it is possible to do, at the start.

Anyway, thanks for your help.

I can help if you're on a PlayStation.

You just have to equip both at the same time. Go into your invo and pick your weapon. Press R1 or L1 depending on which hand you use to fight. Then go to your magic and do the same thing with the empty hand.
Done :)
