I got the idea for this when posting in the thread about what inspired your character's image, but knowing the depth people go to in RP, I wondered who has back stories to items their characters possess be they weapons, armor, apparel or whatever?

For me, there are typically several items I keep either equipped or on my character that have some historical meaning to him, and some that he keeps in his home.

I'll post a few screenshots and descriptions of stuff in a followup post shortly.

Harc

Big Hog
Aerinir acquired the "inquisitor's Blade" (Daedric Dagger with absorb health enchantment) as a reward for leading a successful strike against the imperial legion back during the Great War, and of course he wears the Aldmeri Amulet (+60 magicka regen) and the Ring of the Dominion (destruction spells cost 25% less) which the Battalion quartermaster created and enchante for him. Not to mention his Enchanted 30 plus magicka Thalmor gloves, and his ressist shock boots which he enchanted himself

My characters aren't really hoarders anymore, but they act more like museum curators. I try to keep one of everything, but I do always keep the iron dagger from Alvor's forge.

halcyondaiz

Finder of Warm Sands
My Khajiit always has to have skooma in her homes. Not because she uses it, but to remind her that once upon a time, she was a lowly addict ready for the chopping block, and now, because she focused and came off of it, she's the listener and guildmaster of thieves.

I guess her mentality is, "Look. I keep you around to show you what I've become without and to remind myself I don't need you."

Doesn't help that for the first 30 levels or so, I played her as a skooma addict struggling to overcome her addiction. But it fit my backstory for her, so I kept it as her little quirk.

She always keeps the Blade of Woe on her. She doesn't use it, not since she enchanted her daedric sword, but she keeps it to remind her of Astrid, and the only family she's ever really had.

She has a golden necklace enchanted with a one-handed enchantment, and I play it as a gift from the mother she never knew. It was the only thing she ever really had growing up.

There's a few others, but I'm away from my xbox & don't recall them off the top of my head ATM. :)

For my main character, the items shown here are always on him, though sometimes covered by armor or other clothing:

1 - DWEMER GOGGLES: These belonged to his father, Shinji who was an adventurer/privateer and found these while exploring one of the many Dwemer ruins on Stros M'Kai. Raido usually just wears these to wear them but they do function with either a night-eye or detect life/undead type behavior when activated.

2 - DAEDRIC NECKLACE: This was a gift from his mother several years before her death. She was a gifted mystic as well a master with a bow. She was in many ways his balanced spiritual center to his father's bold, fiery warrior personality.

3 - DAEDRIC RING: This was a gift from his mother to his younger brother Satoro who was killed when the two of them accidentally wandered into the middle of the fight that netted the imperials Ulfric and ultimately got Raido sent to Helgen to be executed. His mother gave Satoro the ring when she gave Raido the necklace

The following are different possessions that have deep meaning for him but typically aren't on him, but rather kept somewhere safe at home:
items-battleaxe-psijcirobe.png

Pictured @ left is the Skyforge Steel Battle-Axe given to him by Eorlund upon Raido's induction into the Companions. While he typically uses his katana-style sword in battle, Raido requested Eorlund craft the battle-axe because it was both a homage to Ysgramor as well as his father who was quite fond of axes in battle. Eorlund is also the only master blacksmith that Raido has ever trained under, serving somewhat of an apprenticeship and eventually becoming a master at the craft himself.

Pictured @ right is the Psijic robe that belonged to his mother. As a kid, Raido did not know his mother had been in the Order or what the Order even was. He just knew she was a unrivaled source of wisdom and clarity as well as a highly skilled mage. During his visit during the Eye of Magnus incident in the Mages' College, the Psijic Quanir gave Raido her robe and revealed she had been a Psijic advisor to his father whom she ultimately fell in love with and married. Raido typically only wears it because it seems to help him find balance and focus during meditation, a skill his mother taught him as a kid.

"Zu'u Alduin. Zok sahrot do naan ko Lein!"
My character kept every weapon he received from the Jarls upon becoming thane and put each one on display in the corresponding house (Axe of Whiterun put on a weapon rack in Breezehome, etc.) Also, even if he isn't wearing it he always has his wedding ring on him.

shadowkitty

Mistress of Shadows
My first character had each Jarls' gift on display in her home.
Another had her first bow (One she took off an Imperial on her way out of Helgen) on display.
My current character, an assassin, takes a piece of clothing from her victims.

I try to display the Jarl's gifts if I am nice enough to become a thane. If my character gets married then the wedding ring takes precedence over anything else, as hard as it is to lose fancy enchantments.

One of my characters uses a Blades Sword as his father's weapon, handed down to him in the Alik'r desert, etc

W'rkncacnter

Mister Freeze
I had a character that found an Orcish greatsword in BFB before level 5. As he was a two-handed warrior, I decided it was a family sword passed down from his great-grandfather. The story goes that his great-grandfather took the sword from Ghamulg, an Orc prince after slaying him and 40 of his clan. Whether it was true or not is unknown to the character. For all he knows, his father could have bought it from a blacksmith before he was born.

Hildolfr

It's a big hammer.
My character displays the armor that she's worn. At Lakeview Manor, in the armory, the mannequins demonstrate her various armors. It's kind of cool because she went from Steel, to Ancient Nord Armor, to Stahlrim, to wearing just Banded Iron Armor. So, it's a pretty interesting collection.

Same with weapons. She dual wielded swords for a long time and one sword went on display while the other went into a chest. That's a bit more varied, but Skyforge Steel took up the bulk of it. She has recently switched to two-handed, though. It's been awhile since I've played the file, but I believe it was a Stahlrim two-hander.

Oh, and Kyne's Token. She's a devoted follower of Kyne and firmly believes that it was Kyne's hand that guided her to getting the token early on in her Skyrim career. She may not always wear it, but it's always on her person.

I usually make sure to do something special when my kids decided to give me gifts. If it's jewellery, I enchant and wear it constantly. If it's clothes, I wear them whenever I come home for a while. If it's an alchemy ingredient, I put it on display on a table or glass case.

My current character used to belong to a wealthy and influential family, but ended up having to leave it all behind after circumstances saw her fleeing her homeland and travelling to Skyrim. So when she got the Iron Boots of Shock Resistance and Axe of Whiterun from the Jarl she was so pleased to once again own valuable items and be considered important enough to give things to she became a heavy armoured one handed axe specialist.

This is why both she and I were immensely pissed when some lame Dragr Deathlord disarm-shouted her Axe of Whiterun into the Void. I spent ten minutes crawling around Potema's Sanctum and never found it! She has her Glass War Axe now, but it's not the same.

Ruinel

Defender of Derp
One of my characters has a room full of stolen sweet rolls, though I suspect she isn't very sentimental over them.
*DARK BROTHERHOOD SPOILERS*
I suppose that every character of mine always keeps the Nightweaver's Band on them, to remember the deaths of their old friends.
I once picked a circlet from Farkas's pocket, which I found very funny. I gave him a whole backstory of being a lost princess from a different galaxy.

Gigapact

Lollygagging Milk Drinker (according to guards)
Well I normally always carry my Daedric artifacts, showing my devotion to the Daedra. I for sure keep Molag Bal's mace and Clavicus Vile's masque beause they are the ones I am mainly devoted to.

I also always find the alive butterfly in a jar in some shack. It's my pet. Since it's beautiful, it resembles what my character wish she could be inside. She knows inside she's ugly, hateful, angry and immoral, but when she sees this beautiful butterfly, she wish she could be good inside.

I normally always keep my DB armor (even if I'm not wearing it) as this resembles my strongest connection to a faction, the Dark Brotherhood, especially once I become Listener.

I also keep Astrid's Blade of Woe as this represents my power to take life, and to take power through murder. She betrayed me greatly, and I killed her, so this weapon symbolizes that I won and you can't get away with betrayal.

I also keep Arentino's loom (not sure how to spell his name, but it's the little boy in the beginning of DB) because it symbolizes how the innocence of children always gets corrupted, and this is how my character felt as a child, full of hatred.

Last, but not least, I typically carry a diamond or sapphire around always. The gems remind my Character of when she used to be poor as a child. She had nothing and she was constantly starving, left to rot in the mud with the pigs. Her stealing/finding/selling gems is her way of making money mainly, and it helps her remember that she is no longer in her childhood, that she made something of herself.

Oh and Azura's star, because it represents her hunger to kill. Since the star consumes endless souls, she feels this is the only way to truly kill someone all the way, by stealing their soul and using it.

mattizcool

Flying lawnmowers are cool.
My Khajiit character, Ka'Matrey, dual wields his parents Scimitars. Each of his parents kept a Scimitar that has been passed down from generations before them. After his parents were murdered by an infamous gang of bandits, Ka'Matrey keeps both of his family's swords and will use them to spill the blood of the bandit group responsible for his parents' death. (in my character's backstory, his parents were exiled from both Cyrodiil and Elsweyr and were forced to live in the backwoods of Skyrim)

The Wanderer

Young Heritic
One of my Character's kept all of his Weapons and Armor sets once he retired them.

WarriorMage

Hey! Someone stole my sweet roll!
Not yet but my Breton (who is a werewolf) is going to make and enchant a silver ring and silver necklace when she maxes out her Enchanting perks. She also has a silver and moonstone circlet and some ragged robes that will be enchanted. Maybe the Shrouded Boots too. Something along the lines of Health and Magica increases on the clothing and Regeneration/Destruction on the jewelry.

I have some new ones for my current character who loves gardens and plants (which naturally lead to an interest and perks in alchemy): 30 Blue Mountain Flowers, 16 Purple Mountain Flowers, 13 Red Mountain Flowers, 4 Tundra Cotton.

What is so special about these ordinary flowers? They were all picked in Sovngarde.

In my head canon, these flowers stay as fresh as they day they were picked the entire life of that character. The day she died, they all turned to dust.
